Repost: UNIVERSITIES AND CAMPUSES USING WAYFINDING FOR EMERGENCIES

In the majority of the posts I author, I discuss wayfinding as a solution to navigating college campuses, hospitals, malls and corporate complexes. Additionally I highlight the extended features that can be implemented, such as staff directories, sale alerts in malls, events calendar and internal messaging system (to name a few).

Outside of these features and their applications is a more serious subject, and solution.

In the event of storms, accidents on campus, and tragically a potential gunman or other serious threat, wayfinding can be used to alert (even silently) visitors, staff and students.

In the case of situations such as storms, the wayfinding system can post (and send) alerts on the web site, kiosk and mobile site as well as alternative routes around accidents.

But what if the event is more serious than a storm? Sadly, there is a potential for on campus threats. The chance may be small, but is still there. And as the saying goes, it is indeed better to be safe than sorry in this situation.

The wayfinding system can not only send silent alerts to all student registered phones, but can also alert the authorities. Keeping students safe is the top priority of any campus, and using your wayfinding system to direct and protect is really getting the most for your investment.

Interactive wayfinding is so versatile, that really any feature or extended function that can dreamed of, can be implemented. My prior articles touch base on many alternate features, but the use of wayfinding as an emergency fail safe is one of the best.

Repost: WAYFINDING FOR UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES – KIOSKS, QR CODES AND DEPARTMENT DIRECTIONS

Why is wayfinding right for a college campus?

Most college campuses are comprised of various buildings, spread across many blocks. Navigating the area can be a very frustrating and stressful experience. This is especially so for new students who are not familiar with their surroundings and spending their first semester away from home. This can also be a difficult feat for visiting parents, and professionals.

What can wayfinding do for students and visitors?

Interactive wayfinding is a versatile application that provides more than just directions. Wayfinding not only provides line and text directions from building to building, but will also provide indoor directions to departments and class rooms. Wayfinding is also developed to be 508 and ADA compliant. Handicapped students and visitors have access to wheelchair accessible only directions, kiosks that are easily physically adjustable and software that speaks to help the auditory impaired.

Accessing the Campus Interactive Wayfinding

Wayfinding is available in three different formats. Adding wayfinding to the college website provides directions to visitors and students before arriving. Installing kiosks on campus will enable users to retrieve directions on site, and also access QR codes for mobile navigation. The site can be fully accessed by phone.

Extended features of Wayfinding

Wayfinding can also be used as an emergency alert system, a department and staff directory, an event calendar and announcement system. The app is also available in various languages.

Why to use Interactive Wayfinding instead of Static Signs

While static signs may help to alleviate some of the confusion that navigating creates, they do no generate directions specifically for one individual. They also do not direct the handicapped to accessible routes, nor do they provide the capability of mobile wayfinding. Additionally, when departments change as they often do, updating the signage can be an expensive and lengthy process. Updating interactive wayfinding is very easy and done at the click of a button.

Managing your wayfinding system

Managing the system is easy. Using the back office, routes can be temporarily shut down for accidents or construction, updates to departments can be made, staff can be changed and routes can be added. Maintaining the system is simple and takes no time at all.

What goes into a wayfinding project?

Any wayfinding project needs to begin with a needs assessment. Is this for kiosk, web or mobile? Do you need additional languages? Will you be hosting the project? Will there be any extended features? There are features that are included, such as directions specifically for the handicapped; and extended features that are additional, such as directories and emergency alerts.

Wayfinding Pro Client, LaGuardia Community College, announces saving $64,000 on costs by choosing WFP for in house Wayfinding development

LaGuardia Community College has been congratulated on saving $64,000 by using Wayfinding Pro to build an in house interactive wayfinding project for the campus, versus outsourcing development to a wayfinding designer.

In 2016 the college launched a revamp on their static wayfinding system to upgrade their amenities to interactive wayfinding, providing visitors and students with a more hands on means of navigating the campus.

LAGCC reduced overall costs from $75,000 to $11,000 by using Wayfinding Pro’s API to build, design and plot complete navigation of the campus. Directories for kiosk and mobile were developed with the help of the WFP team, improving the usefulness and efficiency of the traditional static signage that was available.

The new system provides clear directions to departments, areas, services and real time campus information. Upon completion, the college announced its findings and satisfaction with budget success to Wayfinding Pro.

Wayfinding Pro is an easy to use developer tool that offers users the ability to plot directions, upload maps and access already designed interfaces to tie wayfinding projects together in house for the lowest costs in the industry. Learn more at http://www.wayfindingpro.com.

What you need to know about affordable digital wayfinding

Digital wayfinding can be expensive to invest in, with some project costs exceeding the $40,000 mark for a building with multiple floors accessible by web and mobile. Wayfinding has become a necessary component for creating a visitor friendly environment. So how can we make this service more affordable to the organizations that need it?

Wayfinding Pro™ has been happy to answer this call since 2014, by providing universities, hospitals and any other property with a need for interactive mapping. Wayfinding Pro™ enables subscribers to build their own wayfinding systems for a fraction of the industry cost.

What is Wayfinding Pro™?

Wayfinding Pro™ is turn-key tool for turning your floor plans into wayfinding systems for digital signage, kiosks, web and mobile applications. Key features include:

Multi-floor
Can display URL‘s, coupons, etc.
Integrate with indoor view photos
Alternate routing (e.g.: ADA compliant)
Create preferred paths
Multi-user development environment
Simple to use (no programming required)
Custom build your own application using API’s
GPS / ibeacon ready

But what typically goes into a project? Why are most projects so expensive?

Wayfinding costs tend to be so historically high due to factors such as project management and execution, interface and map design, map plotting and implementation. When handing these responsibilities to a firm for complete design, prices will soar. Interface design alone can account for thousands of project dollars.

With software development kits such as Wayfinding Pro™, you can completely design, implement and manage your own wayfinding project for less than $3000.00 annually. This becomes especially interesting to digital signage and content providers that wish to resell wayfinding.
